Gopi Nath Ji Temple (Vrindavan)

Gopi Nath Ji Temple (Vrindavan) गोपी नाथ जी मन्दिर (वृन्दावन)

Gopi Nath Temple, Vrindavan, Mathura
During the oppression of Aurangzeb, the original deities of Gopinathji, Radhika and Jahnava also proceeded to Jaipurtogether with other deities. The Pratibhu Vigrahas now preside in the temple built by Nand Kumar Vasu. Jahnava Thakurani is seated on the left side of Gopinath, and Lalita Sakhi and a small deity of Radhika are seated on His right. The deity of Mahaprabhu Shri Gaurasundara is in a separate chamber. In 1632 AD, the original temple was built by Ray Singh, the son of the king of Bikaner, Maharaja Kalyanamala of the Rathaur dynasty. Aurangzeb destroyed this temple. The Pratibhu Vigrahas were established in 1748 AD, and the new temple was built in 1819 AD. Near the new temple to the east is the samadhi of Madhu Pandita. Close to the famous Vanshivat, on the bank of the Yamuna, Shri Paramanand Bhattacharya and Madhu Pandita used to worship Shri Radha-Krishna Yugala with extreme renunciation.

In 1632 AD, the original temple was built by Ray Singh, the son of the king of Bikaner, Maharaja Kalyanamala of the Rathaur dynasty. Aurangzebdestroyed this temple. The Pratibhu Vigrahas were established in 1748 AD, and the new temple was built in 1819 AD.
Once, the current of the Yamuna cut into her bank and a very beautiful deity of Shri Gopinath was revealed from under the sand. In the morning, when the devotee Paramananda came to the Yamuna to bathe, he found this exceptional deity who stole his heart. He entrusted the service of Shri Gopinath to Shri Madhu Pandita. First, Shri Gopinath resided near Vanshivat, but later on a magnificent new temple was constructed elsewhere and His service and worship continued there.

Once, Nityananda Prabhu's wife Jahnava Thakurani came to Vrindavan. As she was having darshan of Shri Radha-Gopinath, she thought that the deity of Radhika was too small and that, if Radhika had been a little taller, the Couple would look much more beautiful. Jahnava Thakurani returned to her residence after beholding the evening ceremony. That night, in a dream, Shri Gopinath asked Jahnava to arrange for a taller deity of Radhika. She received similar instructions from Radhika, and had a deity of Her made that was a more appropriate size for the deity of Gopinath. The book Bhakta Mal describes that at the time of Jahnava Thakurani's disappearance, she revealed her own deity and established herself in it. She instructed the priests to install the deity of her in the chamber of Shri Gopinath. When this deity arrived at the temple of Gopinath in Vrindavan, the priests hesitated to install her along side Shri Gopinath. At that time, Gopinathji Himself instructed the priests, "Do not hesitate. This is My beloved Ananga Manjari. Place her on My left and Radhika on My right." And so it came to be that Jahnava stands on Shri Gopinath's left side and Radhika stands on His right.

Be part of a unique project in Vrindavan

The old temple of Madhu Pandit Goswami known as Radha Gopinath Mandir is a bout 450 years old and was severely damaged in the times of the muslim attacks on Vrindavan.
It is the last temple which still has the privat Goswami family in charge and is surrounded by four potencial gardens. It is a project we invite all to participate since green areas have almost disappeared from Vrindavan. To actually restore the old temple completely would requirre one or more big donors. For now we simply try to make everything look more beautifull by creating four gardens around the temple.
Green areas are rare these days. Even Radha Govinda Mandir is surrounded by modern buildings.

About Sri Sri Radha Gopinath

Sri Sri Radha Gopinath, Ananga Manjari (to the left
of Gopinath) with Lalita and Visakha

The Deity of Gopinatha was discovered at Vamsivata by Paramananda Bhattacarya, who entrusted the Deity’s worship to Madhu Pandita. On the altar in this temple are Deities of Gopinatha, Srimati Radharani and Her sister, Ananga Manjari.
Madhu Pandita arranged to have this temple built. Paramananda Bhattacarya and Madhu Pandita were disciples of Gadadhara Pandita, one of the most intimate devotees of Lord Caitanya. Madhu Pandita would read Srimad Bhagavatam every day.

Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Krishna, originally installed Gopinathji in Vrindavana. When the Muslims raided Vrindavana in 1670, the original Gopinatha Deity was taken to Jaipur. The Gopinatha Deity in Jaipur is said to exactly resemble Lord Krishna, from the shoulders down to the waist.

Old Temple in need of extensive external renovation

There is a story about this temple that Srimati Jahnava Devi, the wife of Nityananda, came to Vrindavana, and she came to the evening aratis at the Radha Gopinatha Temple. Suddenly, Gopinatha jumped off the altar and took Jahnava Devi onto the altar and closed the curtains. When the assembled Vaishnavas opened the curtain, Jahnava Devi was gone and Gopinatha was standing on the altar.

Later the deity of Ananga Manjari, the younger sister of Radharani was installed on the altar here. Jahnava Devi is Ananga Manjari in Krishna’s pastimes. Normally Radharani is to the left of Sri Krishna. In this temple Radharani is to the right of Krishna, and Ananga Manjari is placed on the left. Deities of Lalita and Visakha are also on the altar, along with a Deity of Lord Caitanya.

Sri Rayasila Shekhavata, who was given a large amount of land by Akbar for defeating the Afghans, built the original Gopinatha temple. It is believed that this temple may have been built before the Govindaji and Madana-Mohan temples. This temple was broken and defiled by Aurangzeb’s soldiers. SriNanda

Kumar Bose of Bengal constructed a new temple for Gopinatha.

"Sri Srila Gopinatha, who originated the transcendental mellow of the rasa dance, stands on the shore in Vamsivata and attracts the attention of the cowherd damsels with the sound of His celebrated flute. May They all confer upon us Their benediction" (Caitanya Caritamrita Adi 1.17).

Some special festivals at this temple are Jahnava Utsava, which celebrates the appearance of Jahnava Devi, and Ban Behar Besh. Ban Behar Besh iscelebrated on the next day of Jhulan Utsava. Jhulan Utsava continues from the third day of the bright moon, till the full moon Purnima in the month of Sravana (July-Aug).
